Sensorimotor Psychotherapy® Institute
We are very pleased to partner with the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy® Institute of the USA to offer this extensive and practical course for welfare, education and health professionals interested in enhancing their practice beyond talk-based interventions.
In her book Trauma and the Body: A Sensorimotor Approach to Psychotherapy, master clinician Pat Ogden wrote "...the body, for a host of reasons, has been left out of the talking cure. Therapists track client's associations, distresses and defences. They register the various narrative threads clients bring, bearing in mind how and where the childhood story repeats itself in the present. They are skilled in creating the therapeutic alliance, working within a therapeutic frame. Yet, although most therapists are trained to notice the appearance and even the movements of the client's body, working directly with the client's embodied experience is largely viewed as peripheral..."
She goes onto say "...for traumatised individuals, the debilitating repetitive cycle of interaction between mind and body keeps past trauma alive...many are left with fragmented memory of their experiences, a host of easily reactivated neurobiological responses and baffling intense nonverbal memories - sensorimotor reactions and symptoms that "tell the story" without words, as though the body knows what they do not know cognitively..."
This course has been run by the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy® Institute in locations around the world, including USA, Canada and Europe. The Australian Childhood Foundation and the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy® Institute have partnered to offer this course in Australia since 2010. This partnership has stemmed from a long-term connection with Dr Pat Ogden, including her keynote speaking engagements at the Australian Childhood Foundation’s Child Trauma Conferences in 2014 and 2016. Pat will be joining us again in 2018.
